FG inaugurates AfDB supported project in Hadejia Jama’are Komadugu Yobe Basin

The Federal Government has launched the African Water Facility/African Development Bank (AWF/AfDB) supported project for effective water resources management of the Hadejia Jama’are Komadugu Yobe Basin.

The Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, made this known on Monday in Abuja.

Adamu said that the partnership was to encourage efforts in delivering services for 15 million people who derive their livelihood from the basin.

The ministry has encouraged and supported the Trust Fund to seek for a grant from the African Water Facility under African Development Bank for the implementation of the project to restore livelihoods in the basin,” he said.

Adamu said that the fund would enable several interventions to reduce conflicts, douse tensions and restore lost livelihoods in the area.

The minister appealed to the benefiting states and other agencies to make best use of the grant by supporting the implementation of the basin’s water resources project.

Also, the Country Director of AfDB Group, Dr Ousman Dore, said that development of the basin’s water resources was directly linked to the achievements of the key targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dore, represented by the Chief Country Programme Officer, Mr Andh Mensah, explained that it would end hunger, ensure peace and security, and also promote sustainable economic growth.

The environmental goals of combating climate change are addressed through sustainable water security,” he said.

Dore said that the bank has continually demonstrated its solid partnership with Nigeria, specifically in the water sector, where AfDB have financed 12 intervention programmes.

Our interventions have been up to 650 million dollars, we are optimistic that this would help the country to meet the SDGs on water,” Dore said.

He said the group has also committed 1.9 million Euro toward the cost of consultancy services in preparing the water resources development plan of the Hadejia Jama’are Komadugu Yobe Basin.

Dore reiterated AfDB and African Water Facility’s commitment to the support of Nigeria in its efforts to improve the quality of life of its people.
