C-River Basin Authority begins cultivation of rice with organic fertilizer



CALABAR- COSS Riv3er Basin Development Authority is cultivating rice with organic fertilizer on parcels of land acquired in both in both Cross River and Akwa Ibom States to boost food production and healthy feeding habit in the country
The Managing Director of the Authority, Engineer Bassey Nkposong who stated this in Calabar at the weekend while addressing staff and stakeholders of the authority stated that the Akim Akim, Etomkpe Yellow Duke, Ijegwu communities in Cross River have donated land to the authority while one hundred hectres of land has been acquired in Essien Udim, Onna Local Government Area for integrated agricultural expansion programme for rice and other crops with the use of organic fertilizer.
He said research has been conducted and found that organic fertilizer is free of chemicals and friendly to the environment which makes it suitable for healthy crop growth and soil preservation and long term usage.
Engineer Okposong said four dams spread across Cross River and Akwa Ibom States are being rehabilitated while contract for the construction of one at Ijegwu in Yala Local government Area has been awarded to boost dry season farming of several crops during the out of season planting period for such crops.
“The Federal Government has approved the award of contract for the construction of a dam at Ijegu, Yala Local Government area , this is a dream come through as this will afford the authority to deploy irrigation facilities in the area for dry season farming in the area where land has voluntarily offered us in communities in both Cross River and Akwa Ibom States”
He stressed that the dawdling oil revenue to the country means more efforts should be concentrated in Agricultural activities which is a cheaper and violable alternative to create jobs boost the economy and create food security for teeming pollution in the country
“With all land acquired and functional irrigation system in place, the Integrated Agricultural Scheme, CRBDA shall begin the cultivation of rice which will be on display during the 2018 World Water Day and also on sale in December this year to members of the public to boos the at6hrouty’s revenue base”.
He said arrangements have been concluded between the Authority and the Cross River State Government for the authority to take over the management of the Songahi Farms located in Abi local Government Area of the state.
The takeover, according to him, will increase the activities at the Basin Authority which has the needed expertise to put the place into maximum use and boos food production

10,000 women farmers to be engaged in ECOWAS rice project – official

 Mr Richard Olafare, the President, Seed Entrepreneurs Association of Nigeria (SEEDAN) says 10,000 women will be engaged in the recently inaugurated Rice Seed Up-Scaling Project. This is contained in a presentation on the project made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday. Olafare said 8,000 youths would also be engaged in the scaling project. According to him, the number of women and youths represented 50 per cent and 40 per cent respectively of the 20,000 farmers that will participate in the project.
