Mechanised farming will boost agricultural production--- Nanono


The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Muhammad Sabo Nanono, said that mechanized farming would boost agricultural production and create more jobs for Nigerian Youths.
Nanono made this disclosure during a town hall meeting with the All Farmers Associations of Nigeria (AFAN) and other relevant stakeholders in Kano weekend.
Alhaji Sabo Nanono noted that the introduction of mechanized farming was necessary in order to shift from the traditional system of farming and embrace modern technology, enhance self-reliance and boost food production in the country
He appealed that Nigerians should support the Present Administration In its Commitment to Position the Agricultural Sector to attain economic growth and food security.
“We need to give the Government the necessary support and cooperation to enable it to achieve success in terms of food security, job creation and increased Internally Generated Revenue “.
The Minister challenged the farmers to rise up to the challenge of meeting the expectation of government for the sector is the backbone of the nation’s economy.
Nanono reiterated the Administration’s Commitment to revolutionize the Agricultural System With A deliberate plan to attract Investors and Set up Assembly Plants in Nigeria.
He also informed that “already, we are planning to establish service centres across the 774 local government areas across Nigeria where farmers can access improved seed and other farm inputs.” With the setting of the service centers equipment will be sourced and assembled in Nigeria to serve the rural and urban farmers. Federal Government is attracting these companies to set up their factories in Nigeria and when they do that, it will generate more jobs’’.
He said the ministry would continue to support farmers like the Rice Millers, yam, wheat, maize, etc. to produce more to meet the nation’s demand.”
In his welcome address, the chairman, Kano State Chapter, AFAN, Alhaji Ahmed Mudi, said there was a need for Government’s Interventions to Scale-up Small scale processors and millers towards making their work easier in all relevant commodities chains.
Alhaji Mudi requested a capacity building Programme for processors and extension services agents in all the states of the Federation to take care of farmers and staff at the various levels.

10,000 women farmers to be engaged in ECOWAS rice project – official

 Mr Richard Olafare, the President, Seed Entrepreneurs Association of Nigeria (SEEDAN) says 10,000 women will be engaged in the recently inaugurated Rice Seed Up-Scaling Project. This is contained in a presentation on the project made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday. Olafare said 8,000 youths would also be engaged in the scaling project. According to him, the number of women and youths represented 50 per cent and 40 per cent respectively of the 20,000 farmers that will participate in the project. NAN reports that the project is an initiative of the West Africa Seed Programme (WASP) in support of the ECOWAS Rice Offensive Programme that was inaugurated in 2014. Among other objectives, it is targeting the production of 60,000 metric tonnes of paddy rice for Nigeria by December 2017, using 1,200 certified seeds.
