Jigawa govt. approves resumption of fishing at Warwade Dam


The Jigawa Government has approved the resumption of fishing activities at Warwade Dam in Dutse Local Government Area of the state.
Malam Wada’u Sulaiman, the Spokesman of the state Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, confirmed this in Dutse ..
Sulaiman said that the Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Kabiru Ali, conveyed the approval when he visited the dam on Saturday.
Recall that the ministry, had in September 2016, banned fishing activities in the area after stocking the dam with 300,000 assorted fingerlings to enhance fish production.
The Association of Fishermen of Warwade Dam also engaged 10 guards to prevent fishermen from other states from fishing in the lake.
Fishing nets, hooks, fishing containers and four canoes were also procured and distributed to fishermen in the area.
Speaking, Ali noted that the gesture was part of the state government’s efforts to resuscitate fishing activities in the area.
According to the commissioner, it is also to improve the availability of fish in Dutse and its environs.
Ali reiterated the government’s determination to boost fishing activities among the people of the community.
He said that the aim of the strategy was to empower the people to contribute more meaningfully to the economic growth of their families, communities and the state.

He said that the policy was also targeted at making fishing attractive to the people, particularly the youth, while stemming urban-rural migration.
