Beneficiaries laud Jigawa Govt. over goat breeding programme

Some women beneficiaries of the Jigawa Government's Goat Breeding and Livestock Development Programme have commended the government for embarking on the project.
They made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Hadejia.
NAN recalls that the government had distributed 17, 220 goats to 5, 740 women under the programme.
Under the programme, each of the women received three goats to enable them to engage in animal rearing to become self reliant.
The animals were distributed to the women in the 287 wards of the state under a soft loan scheme to be repaid within 18 months.

Mrs Halima Usman, one of the beneficiaries, said the programme had assisted in providing them with means of livelihood.
She said that the number of goats in her possession had increased to over 12 in the past ten months.
Usman noted that she had also made good savings from the sale of the goats.
“It is a step forward, toward improving the social and economic well being of the womenfolk in the state,” she said.
Another beneficiary, Hauwa Gambo, said the programme had enabled her to engage in other profit making activities.
Gambo explained that she was making money from the sale of milk and dung, adding that most of them could provide three goats as repayment for the loan, as required under the programme agreements.
She urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the animals to enable them to repay the loan and boost participation in the exercise. (
