Centre to train 100,000 people in agric ventures to alleviate poverty

The Centre for Global Solutions and Sustainable Development (CENGSSUD) on Tuesday said that it was set to assist over 100,000 people in 100 rural communities as a means of ending poverty.
The centre’s Executive Director, Mr Adebowale Adeniyi, made the disclosure in the organisation’s bulletin made available to the news Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
The statement said that the training would focus on three major areas -- Agricultural Empowerment, Small/Medium Scale Entrepreneurship Empowerment and Educational Empowerment.
It said that the programme would be carried out under the auspices of the centre’s Ending Poverty in Communities (EPIC) initiative.
``Ending Poverty in Communities (EPIC) is an initiative that was established by CENGSSUD towards helping the poor to get out of poverty in rural communities across Nigeria.
``We are committed through this initiative to assist 100,000 people out of poverty in 100 communities, especially women, children, youths and poor families.
``We believe that poverty is highly endemic, a threat to human existence and it is more rooted in rural communities,’’ Adeniyi said.
He said that 1,000 people in Ijede/Oke-Eletu community in Ikorodu would be empowered in a sustainable way.
``From Wednesday, May 4 to Friday, May 6, 1,000 people in Ijede/Oke-Eletu Community, Ikorodu, will be targeted and lifted out of poverty in a sustainable way.
``Our intervention programme is divided in three focal areas which includes Agricultural Empowerment on the premise that agriculture is the strongest tool to ending poverty, hunger and job establishment.
``That will include catfish farming, snail farming, poultry farming, piggery and grass cutter rearing.
``The second is Small/Medium Scale Entrepreneurship Empowerment training for youths, women and girls to acquire knowledge in bead making, makeup and `Gele’ tying, event decoration training and others,’’ he said.
According to Adeniyi, the third area of focus by the initiative would be rendering education empowerment to people of the communities. (
