Fishermen want modern equipment, storage facilities to boost fishery activities

Some fishermen in Hadejia, Jigawa, have called on the state government to introduce modern fishing capture and preservation technologies to boost fishery activities.
The fishermen told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Hadejia that the access road to the fish market needed to be rehabilitated to boost trading activities in the area.
Malam Saminu Abubakar, a fisherman, said provision of modern equipment would boost harvest and encourage production of hygienic fish.
Abubakar said that they relied on local fishing tools due to lack of modern equipment like boats and nets.
He said they could also not fish in deep waters due to their obsolete fishing tools.
``We cannot fish deep into the river due to rising waves during the rainy season.
``Fishing is also impossible at night times due to lack of lighting on canoes,” the fisherman said.
He added that they relied on wooden canoes and locally-made nets for fishing activities.
Another fisherman, Ali Ladan, stressed the need for modern facilities to enhance preservation of fresh fish and processing of dried ones.
Ladan said that absence of such technologies had exposed them to losses, calling for proactive measures to encourage growth in the sector.
A fish dealer, Alhaji Muazu Hassan, advocated for the rehabilitation of the access road to the fish market in the area.
Hassan said it was imperative that the road was repaired with drains constructed to control perennial floods in the market.
NAN reports that Hadejia is one of the major fish trading centres in the North-West Zone, as various species of fish are transported to other parts of the country.
The area has a high population of fishermen due to the availability of fish and other aquatic species at the Hadejia River. (NAN)
