Osun govt. reduces levies on animals slaughtered in designated abattoirs

The Osun State Government said on Monday that it has reduced the amount to be paid by butchers at registered abattoirs.
Dr Bukola Aluko, Coordinating Director, Osun Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Youth Engagement, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo.
He said that butchers would now pay N700 per cow as against N1, 000 earlier fixed.
NAN report that on April 1, the state government announced a levy of N1, 000 to be paid by butchers on a cow and N200 levy on goats, sheep and pigs slaughtered at government approved abattoirs.
The director added that levies on others including goats, sheep and pigs remained unchanged.
Aluko said that government took the decision due to resistance in some quarters and after a meeting between the state government and Osun Butchers Association.
He said the state government had concluded plans and working on centralising the scattered abattoirs across the state.
The director said this would allow animals killed by butchers to be inspected and certified healthy and safe for human consumption.
``The state government wants to make sure that animals killed for human consumption and meat sold in the state are prepared and processed under hygienic conditions and environment.
``We want to prevent a situation whereby people in the state would be buying or eating contaminated and poisonous meats, processed under unhygienic condition.
``Though we have sanitation officers and health inspectors going round the scattered abattoirs but centralising them would make butchers activities much easier for government to monitor and control,’’ he said.
