AFAN Chairman urges farmers to use organic fertiliser
Alhaji Nuhu Aminu, the Chairman, All Farmers' Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Kaduna state, on Tuesday advised farmers in the state to resort to the use of organic fertiliser (manure).
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zaria, Aminu said the advice was imperative in view of delay in the supply of fertiliser for 2016 farming season.
He said that the farmers should use the organic fertiliser such as animal dung and waste while they wait for government's supply of fertiliser.
Aminu said that using the natural manure was even the best because it would revitalised the soil.
``Relying 100 per cent on conventional fertiliser is not the best for our farmers; they must resolve to use organic fertiliser to revive the soil acidity.
"The good news about using manure is; it revitalises the richness of soil apart from reducing the quantity of conventional fertiliser to be used in a farmland.
"For example, where a farmer needs ten bags of conventional fertiliser for a particular farmland, with manure, he will need just about three bags," he said.
Aminu said there was no point for farmers to continue to wait for conventional fertiliser from the government as doing so might delay farming and cause problems not only to farmers but to the entire society.
"The fertiliser are supposed to be in the hands of farmers since March but we are now in the month of May and rainfall had already commenced in all parts of the state, yet the commodity is not available.
Aminu, however, urged the farmers to be patient since the new government came in at a time when things were not moving well.
"However, we believe that by next year, things will change for the better."
Aminu advised government to ensure early and speedy supply of fertilisers, chemicals and other farm implements to enable the farmers put in their best.
He called on farmers to embrace modern farming system to reduce hard labour and boost their yields.
