Don urges farmers to report disease outbreaks for quick response

A don, Prof. Adebayo Abayomi, has called on farmers to always report disease outbreaks to appropriate authorities for quick response. Abayomi, a professor of Virology and Immunology in the Department of Animal Production and Health of Federal University of Technology, Akure, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure on Friday.
Abayomi said that such step would hinder the spread of diseases which could be harmful to livestock and plants.
He said farmers should develop keen interest in laboratory results rather than rely on blind treatment of diseases.
"There should be prompt report of disease outbreaks to authorised institutes and farmers also need to play active roles in sensitisation, conferences, seminars and workshops on modern techniques in animal health," he said.
He called on farmers to undergo regular short-term courses to update their knowledge on bio-security measures.
Abayomi advised farmers to organise themselves into more active cooperative bodies and associations and to invest in research pertaining to viral diseases in research institutes
