Yobe Govt. cautions against farming on cattle routes
The General Manager, Yobe Pilot Livestock Development Programme, Dr Mustapha Gaidam, on Tuesday warned farmers against planting on demarcated cattle routes in the state.
Mustapha gave the warning in an interview with News the Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu.
He said the state government through the programme had demarcated, beaconed and gazetted over 1,000 kilometers cattle routes across the state to ease movement of cattle and avoid encroachment into farmlands.
The manager said the call was a reminder as farmers clear their farms in preparatory for the farming season.
"As the season commences, our farmers will soon start planting, we should be reminded to avoid planting on the demarcated cattle routes," he said.
The general manager also called on livestock farmers to visit zonal veterinary offices close to them for vaccination and routine clinical treatment of their livestock.
He said government had provided vaccines and drugs for treatment of livestock against trans-boundary animal diseases like Contagious Bovine Pluro Pneumonia (CBPP), Black Quarter (BQ) and Pest Petit Ruminants (PPR) and, dogs against Anti-Rabies (AR).
The manager said that government had gazetted 16 out of 31 grazing reserves in the state, while the remaining 15 reserves were being processed.
He said government constructed earth dams, hand pumps and boreholes in the grazing reserves to boost livestock, dairy and beef production in the state.
