Maize farmers to partner FG for optimum production in 2016

The Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) on Tuesday promised to partner with the Federal Government in the 2016 maize planting season to boost production of the commodity.

MAAN’s President, Mr Olatunji Adenola, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that maize farmers were ready to increase production, and to eradicate scarcity of the commodity.

Adenola said that the government had reached out to maize farmers and they had agreed to draw out a road map that would boost production.

``It is a good thing to note here that the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has seen the importance of the maize production section, and has reached out to us.

``We know that maize farmers have been faced with a lot of challenges, especially producing enough maize for consumption, livestock, industries and others.

``That is why we are partnering with government to come up with a road map that will help the sub-sector to ensure that scarcity of the commodity is eradicated.

``So, very soon, maize farmers will soon begin to maximise potentialities and increase production that will meet the needs of all,’’ Adenola said.

NAN reports that livestock farmers at a Poultry Forum, held on April 20 in Lagos, decried the increasing price of maize.

The farmers complained that the price of maize per tonne as at last week was N87, 000, while presently fluctuating between N85, 000 and N90, 000.
