Akwa Ibom Govt. to 200 youths on poultry farming - official

The Akwa Ibom Government is to train 200 youths on poultry farming in the state, Dr Mathew Ekaette, State's Commissioner for Agriculture has said.

Ekaette , speaking  in Uyo on Thursday, said  that the gesture was part of government's initiative toward generating more employments in the agriculture sector.

``As part of government’s effort to generate employment through agriculture, the State Ministry of Agriculture is to train 200 youths in poultry farming.

``We are considering even more programmes in that sector because Gov. Emmanuel wants to make agriculture a mainstay of our economy.

``Agriculture is not meant for everybody; one must actually know how to do the business, so we need to build their capacities to make them experience maximum yields,’’ he said.

He said that the youths would also be trained on basic accounting elements, ``especially basic ways of preparing cash books to differentiate income, revenue and profit.

He said that the trainees would also be tutored on investment policies and local content development.

``You don’t just start investment; you must add value to our farmers, build their capacities and encourage them.

``The faramers must know the business ethics and how to handle situations that may arise,'' he said.
