Kogi residents reject proposed grazing reserves

Residents of Kogi State have rejected the Federal Government proposed grazing reserve for cattle rustlers across the nation.
The residents voiced their rejection of the grazing reserve in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Tuesday.
Mr Tajudeen Abu, a resident described the grazing reserve bill as ``barbaric’’ and out of place; saying that the rate at which cattle destroy their farms was alarming.
He called on the Federal Government not to support such a bill as it would also affect farmers across the nation.
Mr Adesegun Mejabi, a farmer said that the consideration of the bill would only take care of a section of the nation, leaving the other groups to suffer.
He urged government to also reconsider farmers whose farms were being destroyed on a daily basis.
Mr Samuel Olayinka, a civil servant said that government should create ranches where cattle could be reared rather than allowing them move around on streets and farmlands freely.
He said that other countries of the world have ways of rearing their cattle and urged government to borrow a leaf from other them.
Mrs Grace Onwunah, a trader told NAN that since ``cattle rearing was a business venture, the owners should take responsibility for their welfare.’’
She said that it was abnormal for rustlers to inconvenience farm owners by destroying their farm lands.
Mr Remi Fapeyin urged government to do something drastic about resolving the issue and called on residents to remain calm as events unfold. (NAN)
