Nigeria, favourable destination for all year mechanised farming, says Arewa Union

Mr Nimram Longs, the President of Arewa Union in South Africa, says Nigeria remains a favourable destination for all year mechanised farming.

Longs disclosed this  in Johannesburg on Sunday that the country’s vast potentials included its good weather and arable land.

He urged the Federal government to put in place policies that would boost agriculture in the country.

`` Agriculture can be the mainstay of the nation`s economy. Government should play a vital role in this regard.

`` Government can borrow from the experiences of China, South Africa and other countries with huge agricultural potentials.
``Nigeria has abundant arable land that can be used 12 months a year.

`` Nigeria has the potential to use good weather and soil for agriculture,” he said.

Longs called on government to identify areas of the country that could grow rice, grains, yam as well as plantain and encourage rural farmers to focus on them.

He also said universities of agriculture in the country should be encouraged to go into large scale farming through setting up of plantations for commercial use and practicals.

`` Government should educate the people to go back to agriculture. Field officers should be sent to the rural areas to assist famers to boost agricultural production.

`` I believe that the government can also buy mechanised farming implements and equipment for large scale agricultural ventures, ” Longs said.
