Tilapia farmers set for 6-day training tour of Ghana

The Tilapia Aquaculture Developers Association (TADAN) says that its members will soon embark on a tour of Ghana to acquire additional skills from large scale cage farms.
The association’s Vice-President, Mr Nurudeen Tiamiyu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday that the tour would enable members to explore the opportunities that could be exploited.
According to him, the models learned from the six-day tour, holding from Aug. 29 to Sept. 3, will be applied to develop the sub-sector in Nigeria.
Tiamiyu said that the tour would enable farmers to meet the industry’s stakeholders including cooperative farms’ models and large scale cage farmers, hatcheries and fingerlings producers and water research institutes.
``The goals of the tour are to meet industry stakeholders, cooperative farms' models, learn about their challenges and study the opportunities that can be applied in Nigeria.
``The group will also meet large scale Tilapia cage farmers, hatcheries and fingerlings producers, water research institutes, Akosombo, and other related institutions.
``Places like the cooperative association farms, Kpeve; the commercial cage farms in Akosombo Dam, will be visited,’’ he said.
The association’s official said that the desire of the Federal Government to diversify from mono-economy would be achieved, if experiences acquired from such tours would be effectively put to use.
The tilapia farmer said that the sub-sector could conveniently increase its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) if the opportunities in the industry were properly harnessed.
NAN reports that the tour would train, tackle and probably assist in proffering solutions to both tilapia and other aquaculture challenges in the country.
