Food security: Expert advises FG to provide sufficient, genuine inputs to farmers

Prof. Lateef Taiwo , Soil Scientist, Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Ibadan, on Sunday urged the Federal Government to provide sufficient and genuine inputs to farmers to enhance agric productivity.

Taiwo made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.
He said the provision of genuine herbicides, pesticides, and assorted fertilizer would improve productivity and ensure food security in the country.
He said poorly graded fertilizer would affect crops’ yield, advising government to always check the quality and standard of fertiliser and other inputs being imported.
He also urged the government to encourage private sector participation in agriculture to improve
productivity.
On bush burning, Taiwo said the attitude was disastrous to soil, adding that the act ``leads to soil infertility’’.
He said if farmers must burn the trashes, they should them together before setting them ablaze.
Taiwo also advised farmers to learn modern ways of farming and the use of improved seeds to enhance yield.
