AFAN expresses concern over delay in fertiliser supply in Kaduna State

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Kaduna State branch, has expressed concern over shortage of fertiliser supply for the 2016 cropping season.
The state Chairman of AFAN, Alhaji Nuhu Aminu, said this in Kaduna on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Aminu said AFAN had been compelled to make alternative arrangement to provide fertiliser to its members in the state.
``The rainy season had set in while we are yet to receive adequate fertiliser for the cropping season.
``We are working on a plan to provide the commodity for farmers by ourselves as we can no longer wait for government,’’ he said.
NAN reports that the development is coming barely three weeks after the State Government inaugurated the sale of fertiliser in the state.
The state government had engaged the Flour Mills Nigeria Ltd. in a partnership arrangement for supply of the commodity to farmers.
In the arrangement, the state government agreed to provide storage facilities for the fertiliser distributors in all the 23 local government areas.
In return, the company agreed to provide about 70,000 tonnes of assorted fertiliser at N4, 200 per bag to farmers for the cropping season.
However, the state government said the supply of fertiliser to farmers had commenced in some parts of the state.
Malam Rabiu Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer, Kaduna Agricultural Development Programme (KADP), told NAN that the exercise was ongoing.
Abdullahi, however, said so far the commodity had been made available in about four local government areas of the state.
He said the seeming slow supply was due to government measures to ensure that the commodity meant for the farmers in the state was not diverted.
The official assured that effort was been intensified to speed up the supply to all the local government areas.
