Fadama moves farmers from subsistence to commercial level – Perm. Sec.

Dr Olayiwole Onasanya, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Agricultural said on Monday that the Fadama III Additional Financing (AF) has moved farmers from subsistence to commercial level.
Onasanya spoke in Lagos while presenting a report to the Team Leader of the World Bank assisted Fadama-III AF Project, Dr Adetunji Oredipe.
He also described the project as a success because it had impacted positively on rural dwellers through empowerment and increased their income.
``The project is a success because it has done a lot in the lives of our farmers by increasing their productivity and standard of living.
``Fadama as poverty reduction project has also move our farmers from subsistence to commercial level in the sense that they do not just produce for family consumption alone but commercial purposes,’’ he said.
Onasanya pledged to continue to support the progress of the project in Lagos state as the state government had approved the continuation of the project because of its success.
``Lagos state has been paying its counterpart funding and has already paid for this year to serve as an encouragement.
``Our plan is to make the state sufficient in food production, especially rice because our local rice production is very nutritious compare to the plastic rice we imported into the country,’’ he said.
Onasanya further advised the Fadama officials to continue to update the state government on the potential of the project and sensitise farmers to do more to boost their productivity.
Earlier, Oredipe said that the team visit to the state was part of their routine support in different states of the federation.
"We are here to look at the progress that had been recorded between January and June and level of implementation which is the basis of disbursement under the project,’’ he said.
He thanked the permanent secretary, state government and the Fadama in the state for the success recorded in the project so far
NAN reports that Lagos is one of the core states of the project but only involved in rice value chain.
NAN also reports that the Lagos state government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kebbi government on rice production.
